We all love summer vacation. The weather, the trips, the cookouts: It’s all great!

But sometimes we might forget our healthy routines from the school year and slip in to some less than perfect habits. Here are five easy tips to help you keep those teeth healthy and bright through the fun summer days and nights.

5 Tips for Healthier Teeth

by Van Orenstein, DMD                                                                                                                                                           Board Certified Pediatric Dentist

Reduce Sugary Drinks

Between sodas, and sports drinks, the lemonade stand, and your morning OJ, those sugary drinks can add up.  While they may taste great, sugar bugs may show up and turn into those nasty cavities.  Limit your juices to once a day at the most and save sodas for special occasions, if at all.  Guess what? Water is great to quench your thirst and is so refreshing too!

Beach Day or Road Trip?  Pack a lunch

The food that you make yourself will usually be healthier, less expensive, and taste better than food from a vending machine or a fast food restaurant.  Plan ahead and bring food with you and you’ll thank yourself (and your teeth will thank you too)!

To Stay Cool, Make Your Own Desserts

This can be a fun activity and a healthier alternative to gummies or candies.  Try frozen berries in a blender,  make a fruit kebab, or how about homemade popsicles?  These will keep you cool and keep those sticky gummy foods away.

Don’t Forget to Brush!!

Activities during the day can tire us out.  Later bedtimes make us tired.  And, less structure can lead to forgetting those basic daily rituals like brushing your teeth. Forgetting this habit can lead to decay, gum disease, and bad breath.  Don’t let all that hard work during the school year be for nothing.  Always brush before bed!

Schedule Your 6 month Checkup

During these regularly scheduled exams, Dr. Van will check to make sure that your home hygiene is adequate.  We also evaluate for the presence of decay or dental disease and take xrays if necessary. Additionally, each visit comes with a growth and development evaluation where we discuss age appropriate concerns for your child.
